HOWTO: Remove intrusive ads

Fri Feb 15, 2008, 9:04 AM
If, like me, you're tired of the advertisements appearing all over deviantART, I've put together a quick guide for circumventing them. NOTE: This will only work with Firefox - I do not know of any way to do this in other browsers.

  1. Install the Greasemonkey add-on. Once installed, click the "Restart Firefox" button in the Add-Ons box that appeared.

  2. Install the "no devADS" Greasemonkey script.

  3. This takes care of most ads, but not the recent in-gallery ads. For this, we'll have to add some code to the script, as it hasn't been updated recently. Don't worry! It's rather simple.

  4. Right-click the Greasemonkey icon in the lower-right corner of the browser, and click "Manage User Scripts..." from the menu.

  5. In the box that appears, select "no devADS" from the left-hand menu and click the "Edit" button on the bottom

  6. A window will pop up, asking for a text editor.

    • Windows users should navigate to C:\Windows\notepad.exe

    • Mac users should navigate to Applications > TextEdit

  7. You'll be presented with a document full of code. Read through it if you like, then add this to the very bottom on a new line: delall("//div[@class='iframe']"); Then SAVE the file.

EDIT: Just realized this doesn't seem to always work - the gallery ads still show up intermittently. Use Adblock Plus to block them, and I'll update this if I find out how to actually remove them and fix the formatting.

NOTES:
There's still a few I'm working on figuring out - for instance, the ad right next to this journal. (Oh, sweet irony!) If anyone out there figures these out, I'd love to know - and I'll edit this entry if I figure them out myself.

But for the most part, you shouldn't have to deal with intrusive ads on the site again. At least, until they find a way to be even more annoying. (Among other things, this also removes the irritating "no subscription" message by the logout button.)

Due to the nature of Greasemonkey, the page may start to load normally before the script is finished - in this case, you may see the ads for a second during load times. This is normal.

Note that I haven't tested this very thoroughly, so there may be unforeseen problems, although so far it seems fine. If there is a problem, I'll try to figure it out, but it may take a while.

Just didn't like the old one, is all - because it hasn't felt right taking a screen name from a book title.
:iconrichardkniner:
I thought your alternate screen name was "Felatraan", though...
